The much-anticipated scallop season has begun to open around the Island.
Edgartown’s recreational scallop season opened on Oct. 1 for dip-netters. The commercial season opens on Nov. 2.
Tisbury will open its harbor to recreational scalloping on Saturday, Oct. 17, and commercial scallopers on Monday, Oct. 19. Lagoon Pond opens recreationally on Saturday, Oct. 31. Commercial scalloping begins Nov. 2. Lake Tashmoo will open recreationally on Dec. 5, and commercially on Dec. 7.
The outside waters of Oak Bluffs will open for recreational scalloping on Oct. 17 and commercially on Oct. 26. Lagoon Pond will open the same dates as Tisbury, Oct. 31 and Nov. 2. The Oak Bluffs side of Sengekontacket is closed to scalloping this season to protect seed.
Chilmark will open Menemsha and Nashaquitsa Ponds for recreational scalloping on Nov. 1, and commercial scalloping on Nov. 16.
